Following is a Q&A with Jill Rose, editor-in-chief of RedCoat Publishing:
By Greg Shemitz
Q: What’s your background as a journalist? What are your responsibilities at Health Executive?
A: I’ve been an editor at various business/tech publications since 1992. I’m in charge of editorial direction at Health Executive. I write most of the cover stories and the two-page news section.
Q: What types of stories are most likely to pique your interest? What kind of material should public relations people be on the lookout for?
A: I’m looking for stories about strategies health executives are using to combat the most common problems in healthcare (reimbursement, nursing shortages, getting physicians to use new technology, etc.).
Q: What recent projects have given you the most satisfaction or are most reflective of your work?
A: I think the cover stories I’ve written are reflective of my work.
Q: What industry publications, Web sites and services do you refer to?
A: I receive press releases from PR Newswire and read many health-related online publications.
Q: What do you like/dislike about dealing with PR people? Any tips you’d like to give them?
A: One thing that’s helpful is always having the same person pitch me from a PR firm. It’s too hard to keep track of more than one person from a firm. If it’s always the same person, you eventually remember who they are and develop something of a relationship with them.
Q: How and when do you prefer to be contacted?
A: E-mail is best for pitches. A phone call to follow up is fine.
Q: What’s the best way to send news releases to you? Mail, e-mail or fax?
A: E-mail.
Q: Do you accept photos/graphics/artwork? If so, how do you want to receive them? Any specific formatting requirements?
A: Artwork is great, especially for the news section. We like high-res JPEG files.
