The Forward, America’s most influential Jewish weekly newspaper, is expanding its West Coast coverage and has opened a Los Angeles bureau.

Staff Reporter Rebecca Spence will cover the nation’s second largest Jewish population and a wide range of topics, including politics, entertainment, and local Jewish news and organizations.

“The feedback from both readers and advertisers clearly points to a need to have a greater editorial presence in L.A. and the region,” explains Associate Publisher David Drimer. “Rebecca has an ideal background covering the gamut of arts and politics that are relevant to West Coast Jewish communities.”

Spence has been a staff writer at the Forward on two separate occasions, from July 2006 to present and previously from 1998-99. She also has strong freelance writing experience for national magazines and newspapers, as regular contributor to ARTNews, Art & Auction, Elle, New York Magazine and The New York Sun.

In addition to her writing talents, Spence independently produced an award-winning documentary film on the painter Alice Neel. Prior to that she served for a year as assistant press secretary for the Office of the Public Advocate. Spence received a B.A. from Barnard College, Columbia University, in New York in 1998 and participated in the Overseas Student Program at Tel Aviv University.

She can still be reached on her New York direct line at (212) 453-9415 or by e-mail at spence@forward.com.

Goldberg, a veteran journalist and author, and his staff have enhanced the paper’s reputation for incisive, hard-hitting reportage with a populist, progressive spirit that was the paper’s hallmark in its early days. It is published on Fridays and is available on newsstands nationwide, as well as by subscription.
